SIMON DANGERFIELD 1953 -2010
It is with immense sadness that we report the sad loss of Simon Dangerfield who died on Friday 2nd April.
Simon’s enjoyment and commitment to sailing was only surpassed by his devotion to those closest to him and his friends. Often, of course, the two were linked. A long-time member of Chew Valley Sailing Club, and more recently, Llangorse Sailing Club, Simon raced his Flying Fifteen with great zeal and considerable success. He was a twice Classic Flying Fifteen World Champion – and a trophy winner at many levels.
Simon shared his great depth of knowledge about the sport, a natural trainer, he was generous with his words of advice and he glowed with warmth and enthusiasm.
Born in 1953, Simon grew-up in Northamptonshire and Cheshire. He inherited his devotion to dinghy racing from his father, Roy and his uncle, Trevor who successfully raced a GP14 and a 505. The names of these respective vessels: Beaujolais and Admiral Elsan shows that, Simon must have inherited both his enjoyment of some of the finer joys of life and his lively humour from the previous generation.
Simon joined the Army at 17 where his abilities as a sailor were soon noticed. He found himself stationed at Gibraltar in a team, which raced the Army’s yacht. His family were regaled with great tales of defeating the Royal Naval team at their own game.
Quite an entrepreneur, Simon ran several successful businesses based in Bristol until more recently, together with his wife, Kathryn, they relished the challenge of a hotel in Llangammarch Wells. Simon and Kathryn entertained many family and friends at the Cammarch and in a short space of time, the hotel had undergone a positive change.
Simon leaves his wife Kathryn, Diana his 81 year old mother, a brother, Dominic and his family. He also leaves behind very many deeply saddened friends whom he held dear as indeed did they to him.
We admired the cut of his jib; Simon will be dearly missed.
