Principal Club Trophies – Some notes
Cobweb Cup
. The ice-breaker on the first day of the season: three races – general
handicap
Periwinkle Print
. Donated by W.J.F.Tribe. Originally for Fireflies sailed single-handed only.
Since 1966 this has been open to all boats other than single-handers to be sailed single
handed.
Coronation Cup.
The big one – donated by W.H. Crocker and awarded to the winner of a
single but longer race competed on a date near the anniversary of Coronation Day.
Hern Trophy. Donated by Mr & Mrs. H.R.P. Lloyd, this was presented for annual competition
amongst Heron class dinghies. Originally, to emphasise the family nature of the boat, one
member of the crew had to be under 16 years of age at the beginning of the season. The
trophy is now competed in a two-day, six race handicap series for all-comers. The name
“Hern” may have been a mis-spelling of the original class trophy by a careless engraver!
Dr Jack’s Trophy.
Donated by the previous President this is awarded annually for the best
aggregate performance in the Evening Handicap series of races.
Bert Grant Trophy. Donated by Mrs. Bert Grant in memory of her husband. He is popularly
remembered for acting as race starter when he gave up sailing. This he did with the aid of a
twelve bore shot-gun – the shot thankfully removed from the cartridges. It was reputed that
on one occasion the wadding went clean through a competitor’s sail – which reminds us all
not to be over the line at the start! The trophy is awarded for a six-race week-end series.
Dr David McMillan Trophy.
Donated by Mr & Mrs McMillan, this beautiful silver trophy,
depicting a spinnaker and main, was commissioned and presented to the club by David’s
parents after his death. David had become a very keen crew before his tragic death at a
relatively young age. His parents felt that as sailing and Llangorse Sailing Club had become
such a great part of his life, a trophy depicting sailing would be an apt memorial to him. It
takes the form of a weekend series open to all held as close as possible to the anniversary
of David’s death in late summer.
Ladies Rose Bowl.
Donated by Mr & Mrs G.B.Taylor, It was intended for ladies who could
be helm or crew. The trophy is now used for winners of the Ladies Trophy race. The Ladies
Series is a separate competition.
Junior Trophy.
Donated by G B Taylor. this Trophy is awarded to encourage junior
members. The trophy is a small wooden shield with the club logo. The boats can be crewed
by a senior, honour-bound not to touch the tiller!
Junior Points Trophy
. Donated by H Farthing, this trophy (previously known as the
“Tornado Trophy”) is awarded to the junior achieving the highest number of points from 50
per cent of the Junior Races (excluding the Junior Trophy Race) throughout the season.
The original Tornado Trophy was a fully rigged scale model of a Tornado dinghy and
competed for by the Tornado fleet only. This was replaced and later recast in this name.
Blackham Trophy
. Donated by Mr & Mrs Anstie Blackham, this is awarded to the top junior
helm from the Club at the annual high profile WYA/PGL Regatta.
Frank Jones Salvers.
Donated by Mrs Frank Jones, the two silver salvers, one
for girls and the other for boys, were given by Frank Jones widow to
commemorate Frank’s long association with the club, and particularly for the way
that he encouraged young people to take part in club activities. The awards do not
necessarily reflect sailing prowess, but reflect the recipient’s overall contribution to
the Club in general. Frank was a great cyclist, biking to the lake from Cardiff. He
represented Wales for cycling at the Empire Games. (pre-Commonwealth Games)
Bernard Butler Trophy.
Donated by Iris & Matt Butler in memory of a great sailor.
Paintbrush Trophy.
This was created relatively recently and Graham Dickinson
donated the original trophy - a small block of wood with three artists brushes stuck
into it, bristles outwards. This harks back to the days when all boats needed to be
re-varnished over winter.
Flame Trophy.
This was donated by Robert Dangerfield from a community grant
from British Gas (hence the name), in 1993. The trophy has been awarded for
junior racing taking place on Saturdays – or for junior racing not covered by
existing trophies
“Rumps.”
Sadly no connection with the tabloid media’s “Rear of the Year” award.
The term was created for those sailors exempt from trophies requiring special
qualifications, eg: for men to race alongside the Ladies Trophy, and those who do
not qualify for the Periwinkle Print. The name was flamboyantly plucked out the
history books after the so-called Rump Parliament of 1645 – which was named
because those MPs who attended were the survivors or “rump” of the greater
number who had either fled or been killed in the English Civil War. Subsequent
“Special Rumps” have been created for special circumstances. So this is a
creative solution to deal with “the odds and sods!”
The Club remains indebted to all those – mentioned here or not - who have
generously donated trophies. Space does not permit an explanation of them all!
