RYA TRAINING CENTRE
Llangorse Sailing Club is an RYA Training Centre. It is inspected by the Royal
Yachting Association and meets its standards for instruction, equipment and facilities.
The Training Centre operates under the direction of the Training Committee,
which meets regularly to review training needs and organise courses.
Courses, which are run throughout the sailing season, are open only to members
of the Club.
Information on available courses is advertised on the Training Notice Board in
the Clubhouse and on the website
General courses offered:
- Sailing- A number of two day sailtraining courses are organised through the
season. They are normally held on consecutive Saturdays with an onshore theory session on
a Friday evening. They are suited to beginners as well as those wanting to improve their
skills.
- Powerboating- RYA Level 1/2 courses are held over two days and are suitable for
all skill levels.
- Safety Boat driving- This RYA course covers rescue techniques in the context of
the Club.
- Ladies sailing- Informal courses for Ladies are held during the season.
- RYA First Aid- One day course usually held during the Winter/Spring.
- Other courses are provided as detailed in the Training Programme or advertised.
The Training Committee welcomes members' suggestions for additional courses.
Cadet training:
- The principal training event for our young sailors is Cadet Week. This is a 5day
intensive training course held during the Summer Half Term. In recent years approximately
60 cadets, divided into groups to suit their ages and sailing skills have participated. No
prior sailing experience is necessary. Places on the course are limited and early booking
is essential.
- Cadet training is organised on Saturdays during the Summer.
- Cadets are welcome on general sailing courses. The course organiser should be
consulted in advance to ensure that the course is suited to the age of the cadet.
- The Club encourages cadets to enter the annual WYA/LSC/ACORN Youth Regatta and
provides training for this.
Equipment
The Club has a training fleet of Optimist, Topper, Mirror and Comet Trio
dinghies. The rules for their use outside formal training sessions are posted in the
Clubhouse. The Club's fleet of powerboats is used for training purposes.
Personnel
The Training Committee is chaired by Nick Taylor The Principal of the Training
Centre is Brian Cook . Senior Instructors are Mal Jones, Nick Taylor and Eric Read. There
are a number of Dinghy Instructors, Assistant Instructors and Powerboat Instructors.
